packaging in 2021

You have a large piece of equipment or machinery that needs to be shipped across the country or maybe even overseas. What’s the process? And how do you get started?

If you don’t have experience with export packaging, especially with large equipment, the task may seem daunting. The good news is that Deufol is your partner every step of the way.

Below are some common questions we receive about export packaging, along with answers from our team of experts. Be sure to check out the linked videos so you can hear directly from our team. This piece covers eight questions to ask when you start your export packaging journey.

How should my machinery be packed?

HOW CAN MY MACHINERY BE PACKEDThere’s no one right or wrong way to package your machinery? The answer is - it depends. One of the biggest factors is size. If the machinery is less than 2,000 pounds, a simple box or crate may work.

If it’s more than 2,000 pounds, it may be necessary to build a container with joists, framing, and roofing, similar to a small house. The top of the container sits inside and is then nailed shut from the sides. The design depends on the needs and size of the machinery.

We also take steps inside the container to protect the machinery. This includes cleaning the machinery and wrapping it with sealant that emits a corrosion inhibitor

Does my equipment need to be boxed or just skidded?

That depends on what your buyer requires. If the buyer has no requirement and the equipment can be loaded into an ocean container, then skidding is often the most effective option. One consideration is condensation inside the container. We use a protective shrink wrap to protect the machinery from condensation and minimize corrosion.

How long will it take to pack my machine?

how long will it take to pack my machineThis largely depends on what work we have in our queue. On the first day we receive the machinery, we inspect it for any damage or defects. If we find any, we send you pictures so you are aware.

On the second day, we lay out the machinery and plan the container production. And on the third day, we begin construction of the container. We generally ask for 5-10 business days but we can complete it faster depending on your needs.

How long can packaged goods be stored safely?

Packaging for long-term storage is similar to packaging for ocean transport. The machinery needs to be boxed and shrink wrapped to prevent corrosion. We also use desiccants for additional protection. The desiccants usually last three to six months. We can cut a slash in the side of the sealant to replace the desiccants and then reseal for continued protection.

Do you offer kitting services?

Yes, we do offer kitting services! We can kit according to your instructions and bill of materials. Smaller items like screws and parts can be bagged. All parts and bags are clearly labeled for the end user. We package the kits in corrugated boxes or even crates, depending on your needs and objectives.

How much will that cost?

The best way to get a cost estimate is to contact us. We’ll discuss the project so we have a full understanding of your needs. Then we can provide an informed estimate that meets your objectives and your budget.

Again, it depends on the needs and the scope of the project. Some packaging methods take longer than others. On smaller projects we often ask for five business days. On medium-sized projects, we ask for 10-14 days. However, we also consider your needs, and if we can get it done more quickly, we will make every effort to do so.

Can you package at our facility or does it have to be at yours?

Orange and White Modern Simple Technology YouTube Thumbnail (4)We can package anywhere - your facility, a vendor's facility, or ours. If we’re packaging at your facility or a vendor’s facility, consider that there may be additional costs, like cost of travel, transportation for tooling and equipment and more.

Similarly, there are costs for packaging at our facility. There’s the cost of transporting the equipment to our building. In some cases it may be more cost-effective to package at your facility. We can help you analyze all the costs and factors and make the right decision for your needs.

Can you handle shipping of my goods from my location to yours for packaging?
